A Modelling Tool for Distribution Networks to Demonstrate Smart Grid Solutions

    Get PDF
The increased deployment of low carbon technologies in power distribution networks, particularly at the distribution level, is expected to cause significant problems to network operation unless existing networks are appropriately adapted and actively controlled as part of a smart grid. This paper describes the development of a modelling tool to examine Smart Grid solutions to a number of issues affecting low voltage power distribution networks. Use of the tool in the context of transformer overload, line overvoltage, active load control, Grid storage and Black Start analysis is examined

Robust fault estimation for wind turbine energy via hybrid systems.

    Get PDF
The rapid development of modern wind turbine technology has led to increasing demand for improving system reliability and practical concern for robust fault monitoring scheme. This paper presents the investigation of a 5 MW Dynamic Wind Turbine Energy System that was designed to sustain condition monitoring and fault diagnosis with the goal of improving the reliability operations of universal practical control systems. A hybrid stochastic technique is proposed based on an augmented observer combined with eigenstructure assignment for the parameterisation and the genetic algorithm (GA) optimisation to address the attenuation of uncertainty mostly generated by disturbances. Scenarios-based are employed to explore sensor and actuator faults that have direct and indirect impacts on modern wind turbine system, based on monitoring components that are prone to malfunction. The analysis is aimed to determine the effect of concerned simulated faults from uncertainty in respect to environmental disturbances mostly challenged in real-world operations. The efficiency of the proposed approach will improve the reliability performance of wind turbine system states and diagnose uncertain faults simultaneously. The simulation outcomes illustrate the robustness of the dynamic turbine systems with a diagnostic performance to advance the practical solutions for improving reliable systems.N/

Ontology, epistemology and the complexity of human neurobiology

    Get PDF
Certain ontology and epistemology perspectives are most relevant to human systems’ enquiry. These are derived from a synergy of insights from theories of autopoiesis, interpersonal neurobiology and complexity. Ontology has implications for our comprehension of the nature of human systems: 1/ Human systems are embodied and situated, exhibiting selforganising and emergent properties; 2/ Human experience is personal but not private, it is born in the interactions with the environment, and is validated by the human structure; 3/ Changes in human structure are necessarily subservient to conservation of autopoiesis, i.e. self-production and maintaining life. The epistemological implications deem ontology and epistemology as mutually informative in human enquiry; the thrust of this article. Our knowledge is limited by our capabilities of awareness. The quality of perception interlinks with cultivating awareness and intentionality for maintaining wellbeing, i.e. sustaining life-enhancing conditions. The concept of ‘wellbeing informatics’ is used to outline a tangible approach to evaluating wellbeing

    A Multi-CAP Visible-Light Communications System With 4.85-b/s/Hz Spectral Efficiency

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a multiband carrierless amplitude and phase modulation format for the first time in VLC. We split a conventional carrierless amplitude and phase modulated signal into m subcarriers in order to protect from the attenuation experienced at high frequencies in low-pass VLC systems. We investigate the relationship between throughput/spectral efficiency and m, where m = {10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1} subcarriers over a fixed total signal bandwidth of 6.5 MHz. We show that transmission speeds (spectral efficiencies) of 31.53 (4.85), 30.88 (4.75), 25.40 (3.90), 23.65 (3.60), 15.78 (2.40), and 9.04 (1.40) Mb/s (b/s/Hz) can be achieved for the listed values of m, respectively

Cross-Neutralisation of Novel Bombali Virus by Ebola Virus Antibodies and Convalescent Plasma Using an Optimised Pseudotype-Based Neutralisation Assay.

Ebolaviruses continue to pose a significant outbreak threat, and while Ebola virus (EBOV)-specific vaccines and antivirals have been licensed, efforts to develop candidates offering broad species cross-protection are continuing. The use of pseudotyped virus in place of live virus is recognised as an alternative, safer, high-throughput platform to evaluate anti-ebolavirus antibodies towards their development, yet it requires optimisation. Here, we have shown that the target cell line impacts neutralisation assay results and cannot be selected purely based on permissiveness. In expanding the platform to incorporate each of the ebolavirus species envelope glycoprotein, allowing a comprehensive assessment of cross-neutralisation, we found that the recently discovered Bombali virus has a point mutation in the receptor-binding domain which prevents entry into a hamster cell line and, importantly, shows that this virus can be cross-neutralised by EBOV antibodies and convalescent plasma

The Impact of Recombination on dN/dS within Recently Emerged Bacterial Clones

    Get PDF
The development of next-generation sequencing platforms is set to reveal an unprecedented level of detail on short-term molecular evolutionary processes in bacteria. Here we re-analyse genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) datasets for recently emerged clones of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile. We note a highly significant enrichment of synonymous SNPs in those genes which have been affected by recombination, i.e. those genes on mobile elements designated “non-core” (in the case of S. aureus), or those core genes which have been affected by homologous replacements (S. aureus and C. difficile). This observation suggests that the previously documented decrease in dN/dS over time in bacteria applies not only to genomes of differing levels of divergence overall, but also to horizontally acquired genes of differing levels of divergence within a single genome. We also consider the role of increased drift acting on recently emerged, highly specialised clones, and the impact of recombination on selection at linked sites. This work has implications for a wide range of genomic analyses
